The Canary Islands Chair of Agrotourism and Wine Tourism opens its forums to university and professional research

Promoted by the Instituto Canario de Calidad Agroalimentaria and the University of La Laguna, the Chair thus extends participation to university students, research staff, doctoral students and professionals linked to the primary sector, responsible tourism, rural development and adaptation to climate change.

First open calls in 2026

The University Seminar on Agri-Food Quality Figures in the Canary Islands will be the first event to be held. This meeting will focus on the products of the archipelago protected by Protected Designations of Origin (PDO), Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) and other official certifications that recognise their origin and uniqueness.

The deadline for submission of papers is 3 March, and the seminar will be held on 24 March at the University of La Laguna.

In addition to this call, the III Jornadas Técnicas Internacionales de Vitivinicultura and the Jornadas de Doctorado: Sinergias para el Futuro del Territorio, which also incorporate specific spaces for research work, will also be held. In both cases, the submission period will remain open until 30 June 2026, with no restrictions on institutional or geographical origin.

Applied research and the primary sector

The director of the Chair, Jesús Enrique de las Heras Roger, emphasised that the objective is to “facilitate the transfer of university and professional research to the primary sector, generating spaces for dialogue between the academic sphere and the productive fabric, and incorporating key focuses such as responsible tourism, rural development and climate change”.

El Hierro to host a forum with 19 scientific papers

In this context, the 11th International Meeting on Agro-Enotourism in the Canary Islands, to be held from 19 to 22 April in Valverde (El Hierro), will include a specific forum with 19 scientific papers focusing on agro-enotourism, the primary sector and territorial development.

The meeting will bring together researchers from the University of La Laguna, national and international universities, research centres and entities linked to the field of agrotourism, consolidating itself as a reference space for the exchange of knowledge and applied experiences.

With eleven editions behind it, this meeting has become a key platform for analysing the challenges and opportunities of the agri-food and wine sector in relation to tourism and local identity, reinforcing the positioning of the Canary Islands at national and international level.

The Chair also plans to open new research forums at upcoming events, such as the International Rural Women’s Day Conference and other university seminars to be announced throughout the year.
